In order to apply to all LCs, the student must certify at least a B2 or higher level of CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) in French.
If the student doesn’t speak French or has a B1 or lower level of CEFR in French, he can only apply to these LCs: Angers, Besançon, Brest, Caen, Clermont-Ferrand, Créteil, Dijon, Kremlin-Bicêtre, Nancy, Paris-Ouest, Poitiers, Saint-Etienne and Tours, granting that he/she has at least a B2 level in English.
LCs where French is REQUIRED : Bobigny (B2), Marseille (B2), Montpellier (B2), Nîmes (B1), Reims (B2), Rennes (B2), Rouen (B1), Strasbourg (B2) and Toulouse (B2).
LCs available for non french-speakers : Angers, Besançon, Brest, Caen, Clermont-Ferrand, Créteil, Dijon, Kremlin-Bicêtre, Nancy, Paris-Ouest, Poitiers, Saint-Etienne and Tours.

Veils are forbidden in the hospital for the medical staff. Your hair must be attached and your shoes have to be closed.
If you were veils, we recommend you to chose surgical departments. You can also wear surgical scrub caps in the Hospital
France is a secular country, therefore any sign of religion in public places for its workers (students included) is forbidden.

An official language certificate is required (no certificates signed by NEO/LEO are accepted). As an official language certificate is considered (TOEFL score=72, IELTS score=6, CEFR. B2 level). In case of studying in an English-speaking medical school, just a proof of enrollment is also accepted. Certificates that are signed by NEO/NORE, LEO/LORE and informal certificates (by a private, unrecognized institution, self-written notes) will be considered INVALID and your AF may be sent back. Otherwise, the LEO or NEO has the right to ask for a Skype call. If the student’s level of English is considered as UNSUFFICIENT by the supervising professor or the student refuses to participate in the Skype Call, the Exchange will be cancelled directly!
Please note your level in greek, even for beginner level, as some departments might require basic Greek.

Bear in mind that CHRISTMAS festivities take place from 24th of December until the 6th of January. Most universities close during these two weeks, so students coming December and January may have a shorter period of internship.
Special Conditions:
Although we accept English, students applying need to take into account that all activities in the departments and communication with the patients will be held in Spanish. We highly encourage you to learn some basic Spanish to make the most of your exchange. In case you can't speak Spanish, we recommend choosing Departments with less patient interaction (Surgery, Anesthesia...)
Spanish is compulsory if you apply for: Family Medicine, Emergencies, Psychiatry. For Pediatrics and Gynecology and Obstetrics it is also compulsory in most LCs.
Regarding the selection of incomings and their placement in the different cities, those with a minimum B1 certified level of Spanish will have preference.

The student must be able to communicate in English in a hospital environment. The student's English skills should meet at least the standard of CEFRL level B2 (upper-intermediate ) or equivalent, and this must be proved by an official language proficiency test endorsed and stamped by an English professor. If doubtful, there would be an interview via zoom to prove the english level. The certificate must include the name of the student.
OR
An official (stamped) written affirmation, that the language of the student’s studies in Medicine, at the university, is English (educational media, lectures, and exams). The document should also mention the name of the student.
We DO NOT ACCEPT high school certificates, certificates of language courses without mention of the CEFR level.
Academic Requirements:
You should have completed at least the theoretical studies concerning the specialties applied before arrival. You can start a practical training period only if you have followed the equivalent theoretical course and passed the examination. For example, it is not possible to attend Gynecology and Obstetrics training if you have not studied the subject or have failed the examination.

How to Apply?
To apply for the Exchange Program, please follow these steps:

Attend the exam, which will be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, on campus in Faculty of Medicine Building 1.
Participate in an interview, which will take place between November 18th and 22nd. Applicants may select the interview day that best suits their schedule.

What is the exchange program?
It's an IFMSA (International Federation of Medical Students' Association) program that started in 1951, aiming to provide a chance for all medical students to exchange cultures and knowledge, enlightening their minds and scope.
What is IFMSA-Egypt?
It's one of IFMSA NMOs (National Member Organizations) participating all over the world in the process of exchange.
What is HMSA?
HMSA, “Helwan Medical Students Association,” is IFMSA’s local committee. HMSA represents the medical students at Helwan University and works on supporting the students’ passion, skills, and knowledge.
Do I have to be an Egyptian to take an exchange contract and participate in the program?
No, It’s just a must to be a student of the Faculty of Medicine at Helwan University.
How will I benefit from the program?
The exchange program allows you to gain more medical experience, either in the clinical or research divisions. You will also receive a certificate from the International Federation of Medical Students Association (IFMSA), which will enrich your CV. In addition, you will have an unforgettable cultural exchange experience and explore different healthcare systems around the globe.
What are the types of contracts we provide?
SCOPE contract and SCORE contract
- SCOPE: is a clinical professional observership placement in a clinical department in the hospital of the hosting University (i.e., in which you may attend operations or outpatient clinics)
- SCORE: is a research placement in a department in the hospital of the hosting University (i.e., in which you will participate with a research group in their study)
(N.B., you can have any of them by choosing the contract type in the form and getting the required score in the exam and the interview. To get a SCOPE contract, you should be in the third year at least.)
Which months can I travel in?
You can start traveling in any month from April 1st, 2025, to the end of March 2026. Note: In very limited cases, the contract may be conditioned, meaning it’s only available for specific months. In this case, the exchange officer will state the contract and its specific month before the exam.
Will I take an officially stamped certificate at the end of the placement from the University?
Yes, only if you attended 80% of the required working hours (6 hours per day for 5 days in the week) and filled out the evaluation form provided by the team there.
What does the package include?
Accommodation for 4 weeks (in a Students' Flat / Hostel)

What are the required papers for me to travel?
Most importantly, a valid passport by 6 months after the period you choose for the contract (e.g., if you travel in October 2025, your passport must be valid (not expired) until the end of April 2026).
Documents from the faculty (proof of enrollment, student record, etc.)
Other papers depend on each country’s conditions (e.g., COVID-19 vaccination, HBV vaccination, Police record, etc.)
How can I prepare for the visa?
After you get the contract, you should look for the online website of the country’s embassy in Egypt and search for the required papers to get them done. (N.B.: Both previous questions will be extremely detailed in a session in the PRE-DEPARTURE TRAINING only for those who will get the contracts.)
How do I travel?
After you get the contract, prepare your papers, and get the visa, you look for the best flight that suits you through online airlines’ websites or flight apps (e.g., Wego flights); the earlier you book the flight, the cheaper it’s.
Do I have to bring pocket money with me? (extra money)
The package covers the items mentioned above; any further expenses are paid for by the student (souvenirs, social outings, etc.)
